Here is a Pheasant (I believe), playing camouflage. Actually, it was walking right on the trail, and I literally had to shoo it off of the path to get it into what looked like a more natural setting for its kind!
Hi, most likely a ruffed grouse from the looks of it. Wyoming also has blue grouse and also fairly rare sage grouse. Nice photo! have enjoyed your blog and your photos. Jim
Aha! Thanks for the clarification....I have heard someone else mention it could be a grouse. I encountered several, and at dusk, one scared the crap out of me. It made a wing-flapping gesture (to attract a mate?) that sounded like helicopter rotors (minus the engine whine): Whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop
....a coworked from WY mentioned grouse after that description. Thanks for the comment!
